Somi Uddin is a 57-year-old Rohingya musician. He fled the Arakan Army’s escalating oppression in Buthidaung, Arakan State, and became a refugee in Bangladesh in July 2025.
For the past seven years, my life has been filled with struggle and displacement.On Wednesday, July 17, 2025, I crossed from Myanmar into Bangladesh. Before that, I had already lived as a displaced person, moving from one village to another within Arakan.
Somi feels devastated by what is happening in Arakan. He say "Our national enemies are trying to drive us out of our homeland.
Between the Myanmar government and the Arakan Army, they are attempting to cleanse us from Arakan."
"For a long time, I hoped I could return to my village — but in the end, I could not.
I became the first refugee in my family, and now, for the first time, my parents are also refugees."
"I take solace in my music. But that is sometimes bitter sweet as memories overwhelm me.
